2D vs 3D Shapes

What Are 2D and 3D Shapes?

A 2D shape is flat. You can only see it from the front. It has length and width. A 3D shape is solid. You can pick it up and hold it. It has length, width, and height.

🔍 Why is this useful? Knowing the difference helps us describe the world around us, from a piece of paper (2D) to a toy block (3D)!

How to Tell Them Apart

  1. Look at it: Can you see all of it at once? If yes, it's probably 2D.
  2. Touch it: Can you pick it up and feel its sides? If yes, it's 3D.
  3. Think about its sides: 2D shapes are like drawings. 3D shapes are like boxes and balls.

Examples

Example 1: The Circle and The Sphere

A circle is 2D. It's flat like a pancake 🥞. A sphere is 3D. It's round like a baseball ⚾.

Example 2: The Square and The Cube

A square is 2D. It's flat like a sticky note. A cube is 3D. It's solid like a dice 🎲.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

🚫 Calling a sphere a "circle." A circle is flat. A sphere is a ball.

🚫 Thinking a drawing of a cube is 3D. The drawing is on flat paper, so the picture is 2D, even if it *looks* solid.

Tips & Tricks

💡 Memory Aid: 2D shapes have 2 "D"s for Dimension (just flat). 3D shapes have 3 "D"s for Dimension (solid!).

💡 Look for Shadows: A 3D shape can make a 2D shadow. Your body (3D) can make a shadow on the ground (2D)!

How to Practice

  • Shape Hunt: Look around your room. Point to 5 things that are 2D (like a picture on the wall) and 5 things that are 3D (like a book).
  • Play Dough: Try to make a flat 2D triangle. Then, try to make a 3D pyramid. Feel the difference!
  • Sorting Game: Gather small objects (a coin, a cracker, a ball, a box). Sort them into two piles: "Flat Shapes" and "Solid Shapes."

Practice problems

6 of the 37, worked through step by step — try them before opening the answer.

1 Which shape is flat and has 4 sides?

  1. A) Cube
  2. B) Square
  3. C) Sphere
  4. D) Pyramid

Hint: Think about which shape you could draw on a piece of paper.

Show the answer

Answer: B) Square

  1. A cube is a 3D shape with 6 faces.
  2. A square is a flat, 2D shape with 4 equal sides.
  3. A sphere is a round 3D shape with no flat sides.
  4. A pyramid is a 3D shape with a square base and triangular sides.

The correct answer is B.

2 Which shape is flat and has 3 sides?

  1. A) Sphere
  2. B) Cube
  3. C) Triangle
  4. D) Cylinder

Hint: Think about which shapes are flat (2D) and which are solid (3D). Count the sides on the flat shapes.

Show the answer

Answer: C) Triangle

  1. A triangle is a flat shape with 3 straight sides.
  2. A cube is a solid shape with 6 square faces.
  3. A sphere is a solid, round shape with no flat sides.
  4. A cylinder is a solid shape with 2 circular faces and 1 curved surface. The triangle is the only flat shape with 3 sides,

so the correct answer is C.

3 Which shape is flat and has 6 sides?

  1. A) Cube
  2. B) Sphere
  3. C) Hexagon
  4. D) Pyramid

Hint: Think about which shapes are flat and count how many sides each one has

Show the answer

Answer: C) Hexagon

  1. A cube is a 3D shape with 6 faces, but it's not flat
  2. A sphere is a 3D shape with no flat sides
  3. A hexagon is a flat shape with exactly 6 sides
  4. A pyramid is a 3D shape with triangular faces

The correct answer is C.

4 Which shape can you stack like blocks?

  1. A) Cube
  2. B) Circle
  3. C) Triangle
  4. D) Square

Hint: Think about which shape is solid and can be piled on top of each other

Show the answer

Answer: A) Cube

  1. A triangle is flat and cannot be stacked like blocks
  2. A circle is flat and cannot be stacked like blocks
  3. A cube is a solid shape that can be stacked like blocks
  4. A square is flat and cannot be stacked like blocks

The correct answer is A.

5 Which shape is flat and has 4 equal sides?

  1. A) Cube
  2. B) Pyramid
  3. C) Sphere
  4. D) Square

Hint: Think about which shape is flat and has sides that are all the same length.

Show the answer

Answer: D) Square

  1. A cube is a 3D shape, not a flat one.
  2. A square is a flat, 2D shape with 4 sides that are all equal.
  3. A sphere is a round 3D shape with no flat sides.
  4. A pyramid is a 3D shape with a square base and triangular sides.

The correct answer is D, a square.

6 Which shape is flat like a piece of paper?

  1. A) Triangle
  2. B) Cube
  3. C) Sphere
  4. D) Cone

Hint: Think about which shape you could draw on a piece of paper.

Show the answer

Answer: A) Triangle

  1. A cube is a 3D shape with length, width, and height.
  2. A triangle is a flat, 2D shape.
  3. A sphere is a round, 3D shape like a ball.
  4. A cone is a 3D shape with a circular base and a pointed top.

The correct answer is A, Triangle.
