Subtraction Within 10 ๐งฎ
What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away or finding the difference. We use it to find out how many are left after some are taken away, or to see how many more one group has than another. It's useful for sharing toys, eating cookies, or counting how many friends are left on the playground!
How to Subtract: Step-by-Step
- Start with the bigger number: This is the number you begin with.
- Take away the smaller number: Count backwards or take away that many.
- Find your answer: The number you have left is the difference!
Let's See Some Examples!
Example 1: 8 - 3 = ?
Imagine you have 8 shiny marbles ๐ก๐ก๐ก๐ก๐ก๐ก๐ก๐ก. If you give 3 to a friend, how many are left? Count the remaining: ๐ก๐ก๐ก๐ก๐ก. The answer is 5!
Example 2: 6 - 2 = ?
You have 6 colorful balloons ๐๐๐๐๐๐. If 2 balloons pop, how many are still floating? Count: ๐๐๐๐. The answer is 4!
Watch Out! Common Mistakes
Switching the numbers: Remember, you always start with the bigger number! 5 - 2 is not the same as 2 - 5.
Counting the wrong group: When you take away, make sure you are counting the ones that are left, not the ones you took away.
Fun Tips & Tricks
Use your fingers! ๐๏ธ Hold up the first number, then put down the number you are subtracting. Count how many fingers are still up!
Count backwards: Start at the big number and hop backwards. For 7 - 3, say "7... 6, 5, 4" and you land on 4!
Think of a fact family: If you know 3 + 5 = 8, then you also know 8 - 5 = 3 and 8 - 3 = 5!
Time to Practice!
- Use small objects like blocks, cereal, or toys to act out subtraction problems.
- Draw pictures! Cross out the ones you are taking away.
- Ask your grown-up to give you quick problems throughout the day, like "If we have 9 apples and eat 2, how many are left?"
You can do it! ๐
