Telling Time: Hours and Half Hours

⏰ What is Telling Time?

Telling time is learning to read a clock. It helps us know when to wake up, when to go to school, and when it's time for lunch! It's all about understanding our day.

🕒 How to Read a Clock

  1. Look at the hour hand (the short hand): It tells us the hour. It points to a big number on the clock.
  2. Look at the minute hand (the long hand): It tells us the minutes.
    • When it points straight up to the 12, we say "o'clock".
    • When it points straight down to the 6, we say "half-past".
  3. Put it together: Say the hour, then "o'clock" or "half-past".

📚 Let's Look at Examples

Example 1: 3:00

  • The short hour hand is pointing to the 3.
  • The long minute hand is pointing straight up to the 12.
  • This means it is "three o'clock".

Example 2: 5:30

  • The short hour hand is halfway between the 5 and the 6.
  • The long minute hand is pointing straight down to the 6.
  • This means it is "half-past five".

⚠️ Watch Out for These Mistakes!

Mixing up the hands: Remember, the short hand tells the hour and the long hand tells the minutes. A fun trick: "Short" and "hour" are both short words!

Half-past confusion: At half-past, the hour hand is always between two numbers. The time is named for the hour it just left. If the hour hand is between 5 and 6, it's half-past five, not six!

💡 Tips & Tricks

  • Think of the clock as a pie. When the minute hand is on the 6, it's eaten half the pie!
  • Practice with a real clock in your home. When you eat dinner, ask "What time is it? Is it o'clock or half-past?"

🎯 How to Practice

  • Draw clocks! Have a grown-up write a time, and you draw the hands.
  • Use a toy clock with movable hands to make different times.
  • Throughout the day, look at a clock and say the time out loud.
