What Are Even and Odd Numbers? 🤔

Numbers can be sorted into two special groups: even and odd. Knowing if a number is even or odd helps us share things fairly, count in pairs, and understand patterns in math!

Even numbers can be split into two equal groups with no leftovers. Odd numbers will always have one left over when you try to split them into two equal groups.

How to Tell if a Number is Even or Odd

  1. Look at the LAST digit of the number (the ones place).
  2. Check if that digit is: 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
  3. If the last digit is one of those numbers, the whole number is EVEN.
  4. If the last digit is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, the whole number is ODD.

Let's Look at Some Examples!

Example 1: Is 14 even or odd?

  1. Look at the last digit: 4.
  2. Is 4 in the even group (0,2,4,6,8)? Yes!
  3. So, 14 is an EVEN number. 14 friends can make two teams of 7 with no one left out! ✅

Example 2: Is 27 even or odd?

  1. Look at the last digit: 7.
  2. Is 7 in the even group? No, it's in the odd group (1,3,5,7,9).
  3. So, 27 is an ODD number. If you had 27 cookies, you couldn't share them equally between two people without breaking one! 🍪

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Mistake: Thinking BIG numbers are always odd. Remember: A huge number like 100 is even because its last digit is 0!

Mistake: Looking at the first digit instead of the last. Remember: Always check the last digit! For 32, look at the 2, not the 3.

Tips & Tricks to Remember

  • Partner Dance: Even numbers always have a partner. Odd numbers are the one left without a partner.
  • Last Digit Trick: Your fingers can help! Even numbers end with 0,2,4,6,8. Odd numbers end with 1,3,5,7,9.
  • Counting Pattern: When you count, the pattern is always: odd, even, odd, even, odd, even... (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...)
