Lines and Angles: The Building Blocks of Shapes
Lines and angles are everywhere! They help us describe and understand the shapes around us, from the corners of a book to the lines on a soccer field. Learning about them helps us become better at geometry, art, and even building things!
🔍 Types of Lines
- Line: A straight path that goes on forever in both directions.
- Ray: A straight path that has one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction.
- Line Segment: A part of a line with two endpoints.
- Parallel Lines: Lines that never cross and are always the same distance apart, like train tracks.
- Perpendicular Lines: Lines that cross each other at a right angle (90°), like the letter "T".
📐 Types of Angles
- Right Angle: A square corner that measures exactly 90°.
- Acute Angle: An angle that is smaller than a right angle (less than 90°).
- Obtuse Angle: An angle that is larger than a right angle but smaller than a straight line (between 90° and 180°).
Example 1: Identifying Lines
Look at a picture of a window. The top and bottom edges are parallel lines. The vertical and horizontal edges meet to form perpendicular lines and right angles.
Example 2: Naming Angles
Look at a slice of pizza. The tip of the slice is a point. The two straight edges are rays that meet at that point to form an acute angle.

- Confusing rays and line segments: Remember, a ray has one arrow, a segment has no arrows.
- Thinking all intersecting lines are perpendicular: They are only perpendicular if they form a perfect square corner (90°).
