Comparing Groups 🍎

Comparing groups means looking at two groups of things to see which one has more and which one has fewer. It helps us understand amounts and numbers!

How to Compare

  1. Count the items in the first group.
  2. Count the items in the second group.
  3. Look at the two numbers. The bigger number is the group with more!

Let's Look at Examples

Example 1: Compare 🐢🐢🐢 and 🐱🐱

Step 1: Count the dogs. 1...2...3 dogs.

Step 2: Count the cats. 1...2 cats.

Step 3: 3 is bigger than 2. So, there are more dogs and fewer cats!

Example 2: Compare πŸ”΄πŸ”΄ and πŸ”΅πŸ”΅πŸ”΅πŸ”΅

Step 1: 2 red circles.

Step 2: 4 blue circles.

Step 3: 4 is bigger than 2. So, there are more blue circles!

Watch Out! πŸ‘€

Common Mistake: Sometimes kids guess which group looks bigger instead of counting. Always count each item to be sure! A group that is spread out might look bigger, but it might not have more items.

Smart Kid Tip πŸ’‘

You can line up the items from each group, one under the other. The group with items left over is the one with more!

Time to Practice!

  • Compare your toys! Which pile has more blocks?
  • At snack time, do you have more crackers or more grapes?
  • Ask a grown-up to draw two groups of shapes for you to compare.

Practice problems

6 of the 85, worked through step by step β€” try them before opening the answer.

1 8 + 4 = ?

Hint: Start with the first number and count forward.

Show the answer

Answer: 12

  1. Start with the first number, 8.
  2. We need to add 4 to 8.
  3. One way to think about it is to break 4 into 2 + 2 so it's easier to add to 8.
  4. First, add 2 to 8: 8 + 2 = 10.
  5. Now we have 10, and we still have 2 left to add (since 4 = 2 + 2).
  6. Add the remaining 2 to 10: 10 + 2 = 12. So, 8 + 4 = 12.

Let's solve 8 + 4 step-by-step.

2 15 - 6 = ?

Hint: Think about taking away a smaller number from a larger one

Show the answer

Answer: 9

  1. Start with 15
  2. Subtract 6 from 15
  3. 15 - 6 = 9

The answer is 9.

3 16 - 9 = ?

Hint: Think about how many you have left when you take some away.

Show the answer

Answer: 7

  1. Start with 16
  2. Subtract 9 from 16
  3. 16 - 9 = 7

The answer is 7.

4 13 - 8 = ?

Hint: Think about taking away a smaller number from a bigger number. Count backwards from 13.

Show the answer

Answer: 5

  1. Start with 13.
  2. Subtract 8 from 13.
  3. 13 - 8 = 5.

The answer is 5.

5 17 - 8 = ?

Hint: Think about taking away a smaller number from a bigger number. Count backwards from 17.

Show the answer

Answer: 9

  1. Start with 17.
  2. Subtract 8 from 17.
  3. 17 - 8 = 9.

The answer is 9.

6 15 - 9 = ?

Hint: Think about taking away 9 from 15. You can count backwards from 15 or think about how many you need to add to 9 to get 15.

Show the answer

Answer: 6

  1. Start with 15.
  2. Subtract 9: 15 - 9.
  3. Count backwards from 15: 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6. That is 9 steps, so we land on 6.
  4. 15 - 9 = 6.

The answer is 6.
