Subtraction Fluency to 5
๐งฎ What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means "taking away." If you have some cookies and you eat one, you have fewer cookies left! We use subtraction to find out how many are left after some are taken away.
๐ How to Solve Subtraction Problems
- Start with the first number. This is how many you have at the beginning.
- Take away the second number. Pretend to remove that many items.
- Count what's left. The number you have now is your answer!
๐ Let's See Some Examples!
Example 1: 5 - 2 = ?
Start with 5 fingers up. ๐๏ธ Put 2 fingers down. How many are still up? 3! So, 5 - 2 = 3.
Example 2: 4 - 1 = ?
Imagine you have 4 toy cars. ๐๐๐๐ You give 1 car to a friend. How many do you have left? 3! So, 4 - 1 = 3.
โ ๏ธ Watch Out for These Mistakes!
- Switching the numbers: Remember, you can't take away more than you start with. 2 - 5 doesn't make sense when you're just starting!
- Forgetting to count what's left: Make sure you count the items that remain, not the ones you took away.
๐ก Tips & Tricks
- Use your fingers! They are always with you and are a great tool.
- Draw pictures. Draw circles for the first number and cross out the ones you take away.
- Think of a story. "I had 3 apples. I ate 1. How many are left?"
